ESPN and the Tennessean report the Titans have begun preliminary talks with All-Everything defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth about a new contract.

Whew. I was getting concerned that the Titans might not be interested in resigning Big Al.

Haynesworth is currently an unrestricted free agent. He earned this privilege by being named to the 2009 Pro Bowl squad. A clause in his contract states that the Titans would not name Haynesworth as their franchise player, a designation which would not allow him to negotiate a contract with other NFL teams.

In April 2008, the Titans signed left tackle Michael Roos,  to a six-year, $43 million contract.. Cornerback Cortland Finnegan (four-year, $16.8 million) and David Stewart (six-year, $38.9 million) scored new contracts with the Titans in August.

Because of these signings, I wondered why Tennessee did not make more of an effort to resign Haynesworth before training camp. My questions are now moot, and I really hope the Titans are able to make a deal that keeps their most valuable defense player in Nashville.
