A reader emailed me and asked my opinion on the Titans running back situation. Specifically, he wanted to know who I thought would make the cut this year.
The Titans currently have seven running backs in training camp. It’s reasonable to assume the team will keep no more than four backs on its active roster.
Barring a trade, or a devastating injury, Chris Johnson and LenDale White are locks to make the team.
Javon Ringer was drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL draft. I think this gives him an advantage over undrafted players Rafael Little, Quinton Ganther and Rodney Ferguson. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s really talented.
Chris Henry was drafted in the second round in 2007. So far, he has been a disappointment. His rookie season highlights included being suspended for using a banned substance and being the victim of one of the hardest hits I’ve ever seen:
When drafted, Henry was thought to be an upgrade over LenDale White, whose work ethic was questionable at the time. Henry has size and speed, but apparently lack the instincts to be successful NFL back.
Henry is currently fighting for a roster spot with the Titans, and possibly his NFL career. He led the team in rushing during the first preseason game, and appeared to play hard on special teams.
It will be interesting to see if he can hold off Rafael Little and impress the coaches enough for another chance to make the team. I think having been a second-round draft choice increases his odds.
