Matt Jones, Jerry Porter and Samie Parker caught passes from quarterback Cleo Lemon, who was recently cut by the Baltimore Ravens.
Jones, the much-hyped quarterback-turned-receiver last played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was suspended for three games in 2008 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
Porter, another ex-Jaguar with a questionable attitude, was cut by Jacksonville this spring after a very disappointing season.
Samie Parker last caught an NFL pass in 2007.
Head Coach Jeff Fisher and offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger cannot be satisfied with its wide receiver depth if they are considering signing one of these receivers. Or, perhaps, Nate Washington’s hamstring injury is serious enough for him to miss several games.
The decision to bring in Jones, Porter and Parker hints at desperation. It’s not something you want to see from your favorite team before the season begins.
Paul Williams might as well pack his bags, and consider Lavelle Hawkins (and quarterback Patrick Ramsey) as officially on the bubble.
I have no problem if the Titans decide to sign the troubled Jones, who presumably has put his substance abuse issues behind him.
But if the Titans are willing to give this Jones a second chance, why not go all the way and sign the other Jones, as in, former Titan Adam “Pacman” Jones? Tennessee could use a punt returner, and Pacman occasionally played wide receiver while in Nashville.
Just a thought.
