Henry, Hawkins survive final cutdown

Baltimore Ravens v Tennessee Titanshttp://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Tennessee Titans reduced its roster to 53 players by cutting 22. The most prominent player cut was former starting middle linebacker Ryan Fowler. Receiver Mark Jones was a surprise cut to many observers, as the Titans currently have a need for a proven punt returner.

Running back Chris Henry has not played up to his second-round draft status, but he played lights out during the 2009 preseason. He made the roster over Quinton Ganther, who was injured during the last preseason game.

Wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins also made the roster. It might be too soon to give up on the Hawk, but rookie surprise Dominique Edison has surpassed him on the depth chart. Since Hawkins doesn’t offer much in the return game, I wonder if he still might be a candidate for release if the Titans pick up a receiver/punt returner off the waiver wire.

Tennessee decided to keep ten defensive lineman. These individuals (with the exception of rookie Sen’Derrick Marks, who has shown very little so far) are too talented to release. Any of them, including Marks, would quickly be snapped up by another team if the Titans cut them.

I’m very happy they kept Kevin Vickerson, and I hope he receives significant playing time as part of the defensive line rotation.

Patrick Ramsey was retained as the third quarterback. I suspect he, along with Hawkins, might be released if the Titans pick up another receiver/punt returner.

Congratulations to all 53 players, and go Titans!
